Craniosacral Techniques

Craniosacral techniques are those used in Craniosacral Therapy (CST), a hands on therapy that uses a gentle, non-invasive and subtle touch. Although gentle these techniques can be incredibly powerful. They affect the central nervous system and assist in improving function throughout the whole body.

CST aims to treat the craniosacral system, a term used by Dr John Upledger to describe the system of the body that includes the meningeal membranes (that surround and support the brain and spinal cord), the bones of the head to which they attach and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord.

This fascial system is at the core of the body so it is not surprising that if the system is misaligned it will have an effect on the rest of the body.

This system has a rhythm (different to the cardiac or breathing rhythm) and the practitioner uses their listening touch to feel and monitor this rhythm to see what they may be able to do to improve its functioning.

An important part of the approach is that your body knows exactly what to do in order to straighten out the fascia and the therapist is listening to what it needs and helping it to do it.

Clients find CST effective for a wide range of problems associated with discomfort, pain and dysfunction. It also appears to stimulate the body’s natural healing process.
